2. Zoho

Zoho’s free invoice generator gives a good first impression; the website looks sleek. I was able to make an invoice in a couple of minutes and this what the invoice ended up looking like:

✅ Pros

• Easy to use and looks good
• Customization options for colors, layout, business logo, and text fields

❌ Cons

• The invoice date was set to today’s date by default, but it didn’t actually appear on the invoice unless I went to the calendar and manually selected it as well
• You can’t preview the different colors and invoice types before you download the invoice
• Big watermark on the final invoice
• If you use the tab function to make invoices quickly, it moves through the items in the wrong order

At first glance the invoice generator from Invoice-Generator looks fine, but there are a lot of ads on the website, even popups that cover the invoice. However, the actual invoice generator works well and it only took a couple of minutes to make the invoice:

• The invoice is saved in your browser, so you can edit it if you’ve made a mistake. However, if you clear your cookies and cache, your saved invoices disappear.
• You can edit the headers to make the invoice more tailored to your brand

❌ Cons

• Many distracting ads and pop-ups on the website, which cover part of the screen
• More bare-bones invoice, not possible to customize the colors or the layout.
• You cannot add tax per product. If you have items with different tax rates, then you need to make one invoice per tax rate.

This one is very similar to Invoice-Generator. However, you can’t actually download the invoice without making an account.

✅ Pros

• A lot of customization options, like color and design
• It’s possible to send via email straight from the generator. However, there’s no preview of what the email will look like.

Wise has a really easy-to-use invoice generator, all the fields are clearly labeled and it’s quick to fill out. However, the logo I uploaded didn’t actually appear on the invoice.

Yes, Adobe has created their own invoice generator, and there’s many templates to choose from. Here’s what my invoice ended up looking like:

• Professional-looking designs

❌ Cons

• Difficult to edit the templates. If you want to add other fields, you have to move things around. I ended up searching through a lot of templates to find one that included company details
• Prices, taxes and discounts aren’t calculated automatically, so if you use Adobe you have to do more manual work

Canva has a free invoice generator, but there’s only one template. You can play around with this to make it your own, but you’ll need to sign up to Canva. Here’s what the invoice ended up looking like: 

✅ Pros

• Easy to use
• No watermark on the invoice

❌ Cons

• They only have one template, and if you want to make large changes to the design, including uploading your own logo, you have to make an account
• I had to add a tax field to the template, as it wasn’t included
• Prices, taxes and discounts aren’t calculated automatically

The invoice generator from Online Invoices doesn’t look that professional, but the actual invoice looks good. It was easy to use, but it’s missing some essential information like tax and due date, which I had to add manually. 

✅ Pros

• Easy to understand design
• Clean and professional-looking invoice

❌ Cons  

• Not possible to add tax at all
• Due date isn’t a default field, I had to add it manually

9. Free Invoice Builder

At first glance, it looks like you have to log in to use this one, but you can actually click Continue as guest to make an invoice:

 ✅ Pros

• A lot of customization options, you can add a logo as well as additional fields. 
• Relatively quick to use

❌ Cons

• The logo turned out very small on the PDF
• To be able to download the invoice, you have to enter your name, country, and company size
• The layout is a bit more complicated, for example, in order to add tax you have to create a tax rate with name and percentage instead of just typing it into the invoice

10. Invoice Home

This invoice generator is very easy to use, but you need to enter and verify your email address to be able to download the invoice. You can’t invoice for more than $1000 without signing up for a paid plan, so I wasn’t able to make an invoice with Invoice Home.

Which invoice generator you should choose depends on your needs. If you want something that’s quick and easy to use, Conta, Zoho, or Invoice-Generator are probably the best options out of all of these, but be aware that Invoice-Generator has a lot of distracting ads on their site. 

Some of the free invoice generators have more options to customize your invoice, but if you want to do that, you have create an account, or even pay to be able to download the invoice.
